Big brother to the Baboosic, the 16’ Prospector has maneuverability and carrying capacity in spades. Lots of rocker means this canoe can turn on a dime in spite of its length, and the deep hull means it can be loaded extremely heavily and the tracking only improves as the canoe is more heavily laden. The Prospector is a fantastic canoe for tandem trips with the supplies needed for even extended journeys, and enough maneuverability to handle the currents on streams and rivers. In many ways this is the quintessential choice for long backcountry trips in the Boundary Waters of Northern Minnesota.

Weighing under 60 pounds, the Prospector is straightforward to load and unload for one or two people. Strong, lightweight fiberglass or impact-resistant Kevlar and Carbon Fiber are place together under a striking gel coat to create a perfect blend of weight, rigidity, and durability, and then finished off with stunning Cherry ribs to add an additional helping of both beauty and strength. Hardwood ash and cherry appointments from the gunnels to the yoke round out the canoe, lending it a timeless look that will hold up for years to come.

    Amazing craftsmanship and service

Posted by Geoffrey Schoenhofen on Sep 14th 2020

I ordered my first canoe this year, after having owned paddles from sanborn, I figured Merrimack was the way to go with a canoe, so it is something that can last and be passed down in the family, similar to the aluminum canoe my uncle has been allowing myself, wife, and kids to use. The custom design service was amazing and I highly recommend a custom wood burning or one of their premade designs. The service is awesome, even with a couple bonus photos sent to me of the canoe being made. Thanks for the great job!

Best of the Best all around canoe!

I have 2 Merrimack and 1 Sanborn canoe and the Prospector is by far the most versatile model. You can load this puppy down and it tracks and turns quickly! It is a bit "tippy" than other models, but with experience you will learn to tame that and appreciate the maneuverability versus the flat bottom canoes. It will also track smooth and less tippy once loaded down.
